Changing the Mundane into Wonderful!
When purchasing a home in a new builder’s development 20 or 30 years ago; owners were thrilled with that “new” home feel that included sparkling new kitchens and baths. However, the reality of the use of materials which are commonly referred to as “builder’s grade” becomes evident when the look becomes outdated and the quality of the materials do not last.
Builders have to be conservative when planning the finishing materials in the houses they construct in order to make a profit. The house may have visually interesting spaces but the details of good design, utilizing space and the use of quality materials is rarely evident.
Kitchens and bathrooms in these homes are now ready to be customized to reflect today’s lifestyle and the personality of their current occupants. Updating the kitchen and bathrooms is the most important renovation in any home and gives the owner the pleasure and use of more beautiful, interesting and customized spaces. An additional and important benefit is the investment of these renovations normally provides a 100% return when the home is sold.
C&C Kitchen and Bath Design, llc recently designed and selected the materials for a master bathroom located the Oak Hill area of Fairfax County. (Refer to the before photos below). The original “builder’s” bathroom was spacious, but had awkward and wasted spaces. There was basic beige tile, a huge tub deck that took up more space than needed and short old-fashioned vanities that dated the home.
Carey Besch and Cheryl Parsons met with the homeowners to discuss their visions and lifestyle. Good design should always try to reflect the owner’s dreams.
The elements in the bathroom were rearranged, but with minimal change in the location of the existing plumbing to save the major expense of replumbing. The new design took into account the owner’s desires and provided a shower at least three times as large as the original.
The selection of the tile was centered around the client’s request to use a combination of glass and tumbled marble. The shower walls are covered in 12x12 soft blue/green glass tile that gleams through the frameless shower enclosure. An overhead rain shower in addition to wall and hand-held showers provide the owner with choices for a relaxing shower. A contemporary free standing bathtub by Kohler is teamed with an exciting standing faucet unit from Hans Grohe promises a relaxing bath of sheer elegance.
Details. Details. When designing kitchens or baths for their clients, C&C’s attention to detail is unchallenged. By listening to their clients, they are able to provide a finished plan and assist in the selection of materials that brings a concept into reality. This master bath has many fabulous details – using marble and glass tiles to frame a mirror, to create a “rug” of tile on the floor, select vanities and hardware that reflect the spa feeling requested by the client. A place of peaceful relaxation was created.
